In today's digital landscape, the anonymity of the Internet has emboldened IP infringers to operate unchecked, making online intellectual property theft a growing challenge. While government and regulatory responses have lagged behind, rightsholders—working through the courts—have developed innovative “site blocking” tools to mitigate the effects of such infringements.
In this session, Kristina Milbourn and Daniel Pink will explore key legal developments and practical applications surrounding the Canadian site-blocking framework. They will cover:
1. An overview of Canada’s evolving case law on site blocking;
2. A clear, accessible explanation of the site blocking regime from the perspectives of both rightsholders and Internet service providers; and
3. Insights into what the future may hold for site blocking in Canada.
Speakers:
Kristina Milbourn is Managing Counsel, Litigation at Rogers, where she oversees all corporate legal disputes. During her decade with the company, Kristina founded the Piracy Lab and has helped to shape and develop site-blocking remedies for Canadian rightsholders.
Daniel Pink is the Director of Copyright and Broadband at Rogers. He leads Rogers' anti-piracy initiatives, driving efforts to combat online piracy. In addition, Daniel manages the company's notice-and-notice program, oversees copyright tariff matters before the Copyright Board, and provides strategic direction on Internet and copyright policy issues.
The presentation is eligible for up to one hour of substantive CPD.
Please join us at 6PM for a cocktail reception followed by dinner and the presentation by Kristina and Daniel.
